Many Chinese apps serve familiar needs, but few have exact equivalents outside China. Use these comparisons as orientation, not as one-to-one replacements.

ScopeMainland China and major global markets
In brief: WeChat combines elements of WhatsApp, Messenger, mobile wallets, and app platforms. Xiaohongshu overlaps with Instagram and Pinterest; Weibo with X; Didi with Uber; Taobao with large marketplaces; Bilibili with YouTube; and Douyin with TikTok. The products, users, and business models are not identical.
Transport, maps, search, and payments
| Global reference | Chinese app | What overlaps | What is different |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uber / Lyft | Didi | Ride hailing | Services, payment methods, identity requirements, and English support can vary. |
| Google Maps | Amap / Baidu Maps | Navigation, transit, and local listings | The Chinese services have stronger mainland data but are designed primarily for Chinese-language users. |
| Google Search | Baidu Search | Web search | Baidu is not a counterpart to Google’s entire product ecosystem. Chrome is a browser, so Chrome → Baidu is not a valid app comparison. |
| Venmo / PayPal / mobile wallets | Alipay / WeChat Pay | Transfers and digital payments | The Chinese wallets also cover in-store QR payments, bills, transport, and mini-program services. |
| Gmail / Outlook | QQ Mail | Email is relatively more central to formal and workplace communication in many international markets. |
Shopping and local services
| Global reference | Chinese app | What overlaps | What is different |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon Marketplace / eBay | Taobao | Large third-party marketplace | JD.com is often closer to Amazon’s first-party retail and logistics model. |
| Temu | Pinduoduo | Value-focused commerce | They belong to the same broader corporate group but are separate products for different markets. |
| eBay / Facebook Marketplace / Vinted | Xianyu | Consumer resale | Xianyu is closely connected to Alibaba’s account and commerce ecosystem. |
| Uber Eats / DoorDash | Meituan | Food delivery and local commerce | Meituan also covers hotels, tickets, services, and many other local transactions. |
| Yelp / Google Maps / Tripadvisor | Dianping | Venue discovery and reviews | Dianping is deeply integrated with China’s local-services ecosystem. |
Video, music, and entertainment
| Global reference | Chinese app | What overlaps | What is different |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube | Bilibili | Creator video, tutorials, and livestreams | Bilibili has distinctive anime, gaming, fan-community, and bullet-comment cultures. |
| TikTok | Douyin | Algorithmic short video | They are sister apps but have separate accounts, content pools, commerce, and operations. |
| Spotify / Apple Music | QQ Music / NetEase Cloud Music | Music streaming and playlists | Catalogs, licensing, community features, and subscriptions vary by market. |
| Netflix / Disney+ / Hulu | iQIYI / Tencent Video | Subscription video streaming | Chinese platforms emphasize local drama, variety shows, licensed content, and originals. |
There is no single “global” app market
Popular apps vary substantially by country. LINE is especially important in Japan and several other Asian markets, while KakaoTalk is the dominant messaging platform in South Korea. WhatsApp is highly prevalent across many countries, but it is not the default everywhere. Any comparison should identify the market it describes rather than treating the world outside China as one uniform ecosystem.
