How to Set Up WeChat Pay in China With an International Card
International visitors can link a supported overseas card to WeChat Pay and use it for many everyday purchases in mainland China. The setup is straightforward, but transfers, red packets, wallet top-ups, and some merchant flows remain restricted.
What to prepare before you fly
| Item | Why it matters | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Passport | WeChat can use a passport for identity verification. | Bring the physical passport and a clear photo of the photo page. |
| International phone number | The number must receive SMS verification codes. | Keep roaming or another working connection available during setup. |
| Supported debit or credit card | International-card support depends on the card network, issuer, and payment flow. | Visa and Mastercard are commonly supported; check the card list shown in your app. |
| A second payment method | A linked card can still be declined by the issuer, merchant, or risk-control system. | Bring Alipay, a physical card, and a small amount of RMB cash if practical. |
Set up WeChat Pay in the app
Menu names can vary slightly by app version and language. The current WeChat Help Center describes the following route.
| Step | In the app | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Update and sign in | Download or update WeChat, then register with your phone number or sign in. | An international number is acceptable if it can receive SMS codes. |
| 2. Open Wallet | Me → Pay and Services → Wallet | If you do not see the payment area, follow the account-activation prompts in the app. |
| 3. Add the card | Wallet → Bank Cards → Add a Bank Card | Read the service agreement, enter your card details, and follow the on-screen instructions. |
| 4. Verify identity | Provide the requested identity information and upload a passport image if prompted. | WeChat may also ask for your full name, address, occupation, and a face photo during real-name verification. |
| 5. Set a payment password | Create and remember the six-digit payment password. | You may need it when confirming payments or unlinking the card later. |
WeChat says some users can link a card before identity verification, but verification may be required before payments or higher limits work. Completing it before departure avoids a time-sensitive setup problem.
What an international card can — and cannot — do
| Scenario | Status | Practical interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Merchant payments | Supported for daily purchases | Use the merchant's payment QR code or the payment code in WeChat where the merchant accepts it. |
| Transport, food, and shopping | Often available | Availability depends on the service, merchant account, and whether the payment flow accepts international cards. |
| Person-to-person transfers | Generally restricted | Do not rely on an international card for sending money to another user. |
| Red packets | Generally restricted | A mainland bank account or a different account setup may be required. |
| Top up WeChat balance | Not supported by an international card | WeChat's newsroom guide says only a Chinese bank card can be used to top up the wallet balance. |
Fees and limits
These are the published rules we found, but the payment page shown for your account is the final authority. Limits and eligibility can change by card, account, merchant, and date.
| Item | Published guidance | What to remember |
|---|---|---|
| Single transaction under RMB 200 | Transaction fee waived. | This is a per-transaction threshold, not a daily allowance. |
| Single transaction above RMB 200 | A 3% transaction fee applies. | The fee is separate from any foreign-exchange or issuer fees. |
| Refund | The transaction fee is reimbursed partially based on the refunded amount. | Check the refund details in the payment record. |
| International-card limits | The WeChat Help Center page lists RMB 6,500 per transaction, RMB 50,000 per month, and RMB 65,000 per year. | Treat these as published reference figures; your app may show a different cap. |
| Exchange rate | The payment is made in RMB. | Your card network and issuing bank determine the conversion and may add their own fee. |
Merchant QR codes, personal QR codes, and failed payments
International cards are intended for purchases. A QR code that starts a transfer to an individual is a different payment flow and may not work with an overseas card.
| What you see | Likely explanation | Try this |
|---|---|---|
| A shop displays a merchant QR code | This is the preferred flow for an international card. | Scan it from WeChat Pay and confirm the card is selected as the payment method. |
| The QR code asks you to transfer money to a person | Person-to-person transfers are generally restricted for international cards. | Ask for the merchant's payment QR code or use Alipay, a physical card, or cash. |
| The card is linked but the payment is declined | The issuer, merchant, WeChat risk checks, or unsupported service may be blocking it. | Check overseas transactions with the issuer, retry once on a stable connection, then switch payment methods. |
| The payment code expires | Payment codes are time-sensitive. | Refresh the code and keep the phone connected to the internet. |
Keep a backup
| Backup | Why keep it | Practical note |
|---|---|---|
| Alipay | A second mobile-payment route can help when a particular merchant or QR flow fails. | Link the same or another supported international card before you travel. |
| Physical bank card | Some hotels, attractions, and larger businesses accept cards directly. | Look for the card-network logo and ask whether foreign cards are accepted. |
| RMB cash | Cash still helps in small shops, remote areas, and during network or app outages. | Carry a modest amount rather than assuming every merchant can process a mobile payment. |
| ATM access | You can withdraw RMB at ATMs displaying the relevant international card-network logo. | Availability and fees depend on the ATM, location, card network, and issuing bank. |
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a Chinese phone number?
No. WeChat says you can use an international phone number as long as it can receive SMS verification codes. Keep that number active while you set up the account and payment features.
Do I need a Chinese bank account?
Not for ordinary merchant payments made with a supported international card. A mainland Chinese bank card is generally required for functions such as topping up a WeChat balance, and some account features may still require additional verification.
Why was my payment declined even though the card is linked?
The decline may come from your card issuer, WeChat's risk checks, the merchant's payment setup, or a feature that international cards do not support. Check that overseas online transactions are enabled with your bank, try the merchant payment QR code again, and keep Alipay, a physical card, or cash as a backup.
Can I send money or red packets with an international card?
WeChat's Help Center says international cards currently support daily purchases but not certain features such as money transfers and red packets. Treat person-to-person payments as unavailable unless the app explicitly shows otherwise for your account.
Can I remove my card after the trip?
Yes. WeChat's newsroom guide says to open Me → Pay and Services → Wallet → Bank Cards, select the card, and choose the option to unlink it. You will need your payment password.
